British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.
UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."
During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
